Ecuadorean Hillstar, Oreotrochilus chimborazo

Cotopaxi National Park is dominated by the cone-shaped volcano with its glacier-capped summit, which reaches 5.897 meters. It is the highest active volcano in the world and the second highest mountain in Ecuador. Cotopaxi was established as a national park in 1975 and its windswept barren lands support most of the high Andean paramo specialties. The park is located about 60 kms south of Quito, just off the Pan-American highway which makes it an ideal day trip. It is recommended to combine your visit with a dinner at the 16th century Hacienda La Cienega, before returning to Quito.
Target birds: Andean Condor, Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe, Noble Snipe, Andean Snipe, Andean Lapwing, Carunculated Caracara, Black-winged Ground-Dove, Streak-backed Canastero and Paramo Pipet.
